i think what he pointed out the timeline is significant especially when startson pointed out that "We had come to find rhinoceroses: northern white rhinoceroses, of which there were about twenty-two left in Zaire, and eight in Czechoslovakia." because it actually gave us some informations about rhinoceroses.

For the question number 1 the answer is because they look for an almost extinct form of lemur called the aye-aye and for the question number 2 the answer is "Observer colour magazine"

well~~~ im not really that astounded when i saw the quote" i was a monkey looking at a lemur" because i thought that we are born in monkey-like.

it is a lemur, which call aye-aye. It is a very strange looking creature that seems to have been assembled from bits of other animals. It looks like cat with a bat's ears, beaver's teeth, a tail like a large ostrich feather, a middle finger like a long dead twig, and enormous eyes.~~~basically they are trying to understand the major evolutionary change that passed Madagascar.
